Silver based brazing filler metal with different rolling technology were researched using scanning electron microscopy, XRD, et al. The results showed that the carbon?containing layer about 3~7 μm was left in the surface of rolled brazing filler metal with oil. The type of carbon mainly in the solder surface are molecules, free carbon, ZnC8 and C2 CdO4 . The main phases of silver based filler metal selected consist of CuZn, AgCd, (Ag,Cu)5Zn8, AgCd19, et al. There are three existing forms for surface carbon?containing layer. Some carbon molecules which are wrapped inside the brazing filler metals have no enough time to rise to surface. Some carbon molecules float with the melt of brazing filler metal to the brazing filler metal around, and then they are pushed to the spreading forefront of liquid brazing filler metal forming an annular ring. Some complicated carbides such as C2 CdO4 having low wettability in the 316LD clean steel will affect the subsequent brazed strength significantly.
