简要介绍铁电、 反铁电液晶的发现、 发展、 显示应用中遇到的问题以及近来发展起来的无阈值铁电液晶的研究结果。 最后讨论无阈值铁电液晶应用前景。

The discovery and development of ferroelectric and antiferroelectric liquid crystals(FLCs and AFLCs) and their some problems in applied display are introduced and the research results of thresholdless FLCs are described in the paper. The FLCs have been developed dramatically and applied to display technology. Bistability and a sharp threshold characteristic make SSFLC one of the candidates for a large-sized and high-resolution LCD. Howerer, it lacks gray scale capability which should be one of the most important factors for a full color high performance LCD and its bistability makes it difficult to provide light intensity control by arranging an applied voltage. In recent years, the TFT LCDs industry and related technologies have made progress rapidly. Further improvement in image quality hinges on two critical factors:high grayscale and faster response. The applications of thresholdless AFLC, TFLC and PNSTFLC to TFTLCDs seem to be an attractive approach with respect to both factors. The applied prospects of thresholdless FLCs are discussed at last.
