A self-designed optical microscope with a hot stage was used to monitor the phase separation process in high performance thermoplastic-thermoset blends of polyether-ether ketone (PEK-C) with a bismaleimide (BMI) resin used as resin transfer molding (RTM) processing.Two types of PEK-C,film and powder,were used to observe the developing morphology of the blends.The final morphology of the blend system with carbon fibers via RTM processing was also studied.Results indicate that the phase separation process initially occurs along the PEK-C film in the PEK-C-rich,and then in the BMI-rich.This is similar to the system with PEK-C powder.However,the phase separation of the system with PEK-C powder occurs rapidly and is denser than the system with PEK-C film.SEM results indicate that the final morphology of the CF/PEK-C/BMI composite is the spherical thermoset particles coated with the continuous thermoplastic PEK-C,whether in the carbon fiber bundle or between the carbon fiber bundles.
