UV-curable waterborne polyurethane(WPU)/silica nanocomposites were prepared using aqueous silica sol by in situ method.Transmission electron microscope(TEM) and atomic force microscope(AFM) examinations of nanostructured films indicate that the organic modified nanosilica is well dispersed in the matrix, while acid and base silica tend to aggregated and interconnected.AFM analysis reveals that the microphase separation between polyurethane and silica is significantly affected by the types of silica incorporated.Dynamic mechanical analysis(DMA) shows that the nanocomposite films with WV33,R900,methacryloxy(propyl) trimethoxysilane(MEMO)-silica nanoparticles show a single tanδ peak, which implies that soft and hard segments of polyurethane are well phase mixed. The nanostructured films display enhanced storage modulus compared to the control polyurethane films.
