Corrosion Measurements of Reinforcing Steel by Different Electrochemical Techniques

Electrochemical techniques of the corrosion measurements of reinforcing steeI in concrete have been evaluated. These techniques include half-cell potential measurements, impressed voltage method, impressed current method and potentiostatic polarization technique. The results of corrosion behaviour of the steel in both 5%NaCl and 5%MgSO4 show that each electrochemical technique provides some information about the condition of the steel bar or the corrosivity of the environment being evaluated, yet none provides a complete data regarding the corrosion resistance of reinforcing steel in aggressive media

The role of the National Laboratories is summarized from the era of post World War II to the present time. The U.S. federal government policy for the National Laboratories and its influence on their materials science infrastructure is reviewed with respect to .determining overall research strategies, various initiatives to interact with industry (especially in recent years),building facilities that serve the nation, and developing leading edge research in the materials sciences. Despite reductions in support for research in the U.S. in recent years, and uncertainties regarding the specific policies for Research &Development (R&D) in the U.S., there are strong roles for materials research at the National Laboratories. These roles will be centered on the abilities of the National Laboratories to field multidisciplinary teams, the use of unique cutting edge facilities, a focus on areas of strength within each of the labs,increased teaming and partnerships, and the selection of motivated research areas. It is hoped that such teaming opportunities will include new alliances with China, in a manner similar, perhaps, to those recently achieved between the U.S. and other countries.

Improvement of Concrete Properties and Reinforcing Steel Inhibition Using a Natural Product Admixture

The use of a natural white juice, taken from magrabe banana stem, as concrete admixture to improve mechanical and physicrvchemical properties of concrete has been studied. The compressive strength, bulk density the free lime liberated during hydration and the combined water content were determined. The results indicate that the admixture acts as a retarder in most cases and as accelerator in some ones. Also, the admixture effect on the corrosion resistance of the reinforcing steel against surrounding aggressive media has been investigated using galvanostatic polarization technique. The addition of 0.2% admixture leads to the more inhibition of the steel

The dielectric constant e' and dielectric loss e" of several mixtures of propionaldehyde-polyethylene glycol (system 1) and benzaldehyde-polyethylene glycol (system II) have been measured within the frequency band 105-107 Hz and the temperature range 20-50℃. The dielectric behaviour is discussed. on the other hand, the dielectric relaxation time T. activation energy △He, and entorpy change △Se for the dielectric relaxation as well as activation energy of viscous flow △Hv are calculated for the same temperature range. It is suggested that the observed increase in T values with increas.ng glycol content is due to an increase in the hydrogen bonding in the aggregates or clusters which would be formed between the carbonyl group of the aldehyde and the hydrogen atoms from the glycot molecules. In addition, the higher values of T, △He, and △Se in case of system (II) than that in case of system (I) may be due to the greater volume of the aggregates and the stronger dipole-dipole forces in system (II) compared with those in system (I).
