A new non-uniform yield phenomenon is found during tension of austenite stainless steel at -190℃, which consists of elasto-plastic instability ξph and stress plateau ξL resulting from strain-induced martensite transformation. It is essentially different from non-uniform yield that is related to dislocation obstacles. The experimental results show that ξph and ξL increase with increaslng strain rate, and ξph, increases but ξL decreases with increasing prestmin.Tronsformation enengy of strain-induced martensite keeps a constant, 3.85×106J/m3, with increasing strain at the stages of both elasto-plastic instability and stress plateau.

In order to interpret the test results of crossweld specimens for application in practical welded components, the present paper studies the high temperature behavior of laboratory cross weld specimens in terms of the uniaxial material tests and numerical simulations. It is found that the crossweld specimen may be used for the high temperature strength assessment, but can hardly be used for life assessment of the practical welded components, which depends on the loading conditions of the components.

Based on the local equilibrium assumption, coarsening behavior of M23C6 carbide at 700℃ in H13 steel was simulated by DICTRA software. The results from the calculations were compared with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations. The results show the interfacial energy for M23C6 in H13 steel at 700℃ is thus probably 0.7 J•m-2, which fits the experiments well. The influence of composition and temperature on the coarsening rate was also investigated by simulations. Simulations show a decrease in the coarsening rate when V/Mo ratio is increased, while the coarsening rate increases with increasing temperature.

The internal oxidation behavior of Pd-40Ag-1M(M=Zr,Y)alloy wires has been studied in air at 800—1200℃.The relationship between the internal oxidation depth ξ and the reaction time t can be expressed as ξ= Kt~n,where n=0.5—0.75.The higher the temperature,the larger the value of n is.The active elements Zr and Y show different internal oxidation characters.For the alloys eontaining Zr,the oxidation rate along the grain boundaries is about twice as high as that in grains,and“lateral oxidation”exists along the grain boundaries.For the alloys containing Y,the oxidation rates in grains and along the grain boundaries are roughly the same,and there is no“lateral oxidation”along the grain bounda- ries.The activation energies of both alloys are in the range of 120—150kJ/mol.Some prop- erties for oxidized alloys were studied.The mechanisms of the internal oxidation were dis- cussed.

A stable face-centered cubic (fcc) stainless steel was H charged by exposing it to 9.8 MPa H gas at 300-degrees-C for 14 days. The concentration of H was determined to be 65 ppm. The mechanical testing at room temperature has shown that after H charging, the yield strength of the steel increases, and the behavior of the transient creep and the short-term stress relaxation becomes more intensive. All the results can be interpreted qualitatively, and part of the results can be quantitatively calculated by the theory of mobile dislocation density proposed by Alden. The analysis indicates that the essential effect of H is to obstruct the movement of dislocations, so that the strength and inelastic viscousness of the steel increase.

The morphology of the dark and bright regions observed by transmission electron microscopy for the Zr(64.13)Cu(15.75)Ni(10.12)Al(10) bulk metallic glass strongly depends on the ion beam parameters used for ion milling. This indicates that the ion beam could introduce surface fluctuation to metallic glasses during ion milling.

Welded joint is a mechanical heterogeneous body, and mechanical heterogeneity has great effect on dynamic fracture behaviour of welded joints. In the present investigation, dynamic response curve and dynamic J-integral of practical undermatched welded joint and whole base and whole weld three-point-bend (TPB) models containing longitudinal crack are computed. Dynamic J-integral is evaluated using virtual crack extension (VCE) method and the computation is performed using MARC finite element code. Because of the effect of inertia,dynamic load response curve of computed model waves periodically. Dynamic J-integral evaluated by VCE method is path independent. The effect of inertia has little influence on dynamic J-integral curve. The value of dynamic J-integral of undermatched welded joint is lower than that of whole base metal and higher than that of whole weld metal. The results establish the foundation of safety evaluation for dynamic loaded welded structures.

The half-width values of the X-ray diffraction profiles are frequently used to characterize the static strength of a strengthened surface, or the depth distribution of this mechanical parameter, in a strengthened surface layer, especially in a shot-peening affected layer. However, for the unpeened surface and the base material of the shot-peened specimen of an alloy steel treated in hard state, the experimental results shown in this article indicate that uniaxial tensile or compressive plastic deformation increases the yield strengths while it decreases the half-width values. The half-width values of the shot-peened surface and surface layer greatly decrease, whereas the yield strength of this surface remarkably increases. Accordingly, in the authors' opinion, the half-width values could not correctly describe the static strengths of hard metallic materials, and, contrary to the viewpoint put forward by a lot of researchers, the shot-peened surfaces of such materials are work hardened instead of work softened. A model demonstrating that plastic deformation reduces the half-width values by decreasing the second kind internal stresses is developed.

An evident inequality between the enthalpy of crystallization of amorphous selenium, Delta H-x, and the enthalpy difference between the undercooled liquid and the conventional polycrystalline selenium, Delta Hl --> c, was observed, which is inconsistent with the widely accepted idea that the two enthalpies should be equal. The inequality between the two enthalpies is attributed to the excess enthalpy of the nanocrystallites selenium with respect to the conventional polycrystalline selenium. The maximum excess enthalpy of the nanocrystalline selenium amounts up to 30% of the heat of fusion. Based on the assumption that the excess enthalpy of the nanocrystalline sample is concentrated in the high density of grain boundaries, the grain-boundary enthalpies of the nanocrystalline selenium samples were determined. The obtained grain-boundary enthalpies of the nanocrystalline selenium samples are found to increase from 0.27 to 0.32 J/m(2) with the mean crystallite size increment from 9 to 22 nm. It is predicted that an inequality between the two enthalpies of Delta H-x and Delta Hl --> c will always occur in the nanocrystallization process of an amorphous solid and that the grain-boundary enthalpies of the nanocrystallized products can then be determined.
