Rolling With Simplified Stream Function Velocity and Strain Rate Vector Inner Product

The dual-stream function velocity field is reduced in order to analyze two-dimensional plate broadside rolling in roughing. The strain rate vector inner product and integral mean value theorem, as well as co-line vector inner product are used respectively in plastic deformation power, friction losses and shear power. A theoretical solution of roll torque and separating force for the rolling is obtained and the calculated results by the solution are compared with those measured in broadside rolling on-line. It shows that both the force and torque calculated are higher than those of measured, but the maximum relative error between them is no more than 11%.

Microstructure transformation behaviour of 610MPa HSLA Steel Plate for 150,000 m3 Oil Storage Tank Construction

Static and dynamic continuous cooling transformation (CCT) on 610MPa HSLA Steel Plate for 150,000 m3 Oil Storage Tank Construction were carried out on a MMS200 thermo-mechanical simulation system. It has found that with cooling rate increases pre-eutectoid ferrite, pearlite, granular bainite and lathing bainite will appear in the transformed microstructure. In comparison with static CCT, the transforming points of acicular ferrite, granular bainite and lathing bainite in the dynamic CCT curve shift to the left proving an increased acicular ferrite and bainite transformation area.

Formation of Phosphorous Surface Inverse Segregation in Twin-Roll Cast Strips of Low-Carbon Steels

The formation of phosphorous surface inverse segregation (SIS) in twin-roll cast strips of low-carbon steels was studied. High phosphorous strips were fabricated by using a pilot twin-roll strip caster and a melt/substrate contacting apparatus, respectively. Solidification structures of strips were observed and analyzed, and phosphorus distributions along longitudinal sections of strips were investigated and discussed. The results showed that solidification structures of all strips were columnar grains, either integrated or coarse in the strip made by the melt/substrate contacting apparatus or damaged in some degree in cast strips; and that during cast strip solidification, enrichment of phosphorus occurred between columnar grains, and the average phosphorus concentration near the surface in the strip with 015% of phosphorus was measured to be about 027% which was obviously higher than that in the bulk.

Two-step magnetization in a spin-chain system on the triangular lattice: Wang-Landau simulation

The Wang-Landau algorithm is used to study the thermodynamic and magnetic properties of triangular spin-chain system based on two-dimensional Ising model in order to understand the magnetic-order dynamics in Ca(3)Co(2)O(6) compound. The calculated results demonstrate that the equilibrium state of the rigid spins produces the two-step magnetization curve at low temperature even when the random-exchange term is considered. This work indicates that the four-step magnetization behavior observed experimentally must be due to the nonequilibrium magnetization.

The morphology of the dark and bright regions observed by transmission electron microscopy for the Zr(64.13)Cu(15.75)Ni(10.12)Al(10) bulk metallic glass strongly depends on the ion beam parameters used for ion milling. This indicates that the ion beam could introduce surface fluctuation to metallic glasses during ion milling.

Ab initio study of the intrinsic exchange bias at the SrRuO(3)/SrMnO(3) interface

In a recent publication [S. Dong et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 127201 (2009)], two (related) mechanisms were proposed to understand the intrinsic exchange bias present in oxides heterostructures involving G-type antiferromagnetic perovskites. The first mechanism is driven by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, which is a spin-orbit coupling effect. The second is induced by the ferroelectric polarization, and it is only active in heterostructures involving multiferroics. Using the SrRuO(3)/SrMnO(3) superlattice as a model system, density-functional calculations are here performed to verify the two proposals. This proof-of-principle calculation provides convincing evidence that qualitatively supports both proposals.

The effect of interstitial hydrogen on the cohesion of the Al Sigma=11(113) grain boundary (GB) is investigated based on the thermodynamic model of Rice-Wang using the first-principles density function calculation. The results indicate that interstitial H behaves as an embrittler from "strengthening energy" analysis. The reduced GB cohesion due to the presence of H at the GB is attributed to the low affinity between H and Al, and the weakened bonding of Al atomic pairs perpendicular to GB plane.

First-principles study on the effect of Mn and N on the cohesion of a gamma-iron grain boundary

By use of the linear-combination-of-atomic-orbital (LCAO) method for a cluster model, we studied the electronic structure of gamma-from Sigma 11 [1 (1) over bar0](11 (3) over bar) grain boundary doping with N and Mn atoms. The effect of the segregation on the cohesion of the grain boundary is investigated based on the Rice-Wang thermodynamic model. It is found that N could not only largely enhance the cohesion of the grain boundary but also eliminate the detrimental effect of Mn. The cosegregation effect of Mn and N on the cohesion of the grain boundary depends on where they segregate. Nitrogen could be reliably used in alloyed steels as an efficient strengthening element.
