For a better description, we propose an ellipse criterion as a new failure criterion to unify the four classical criteria above and apply it to exemplarily describe the tensile fracture behavior of BMGs as well as a variety of other materials. On the issue of describing the normal stress effect on the tensile fracture behaviors of MGs, there are two fracture criteria: the Mohr-Coulomb (M-C) criterion and the Ellipse criterion. In this study, the normal stress acting on the tensile fracture planes was controlled and varied in a wide range by introducing inclined notches with different inclination angles to a series of Zr-based MG specimens. Based on the experimental results, both the Ellipse criterion and the M-C criterion are compared and analyzed. The experimental results reveal that the Ellipse criterion gives a better prediction than the M-C criterion for the tensile fracture behavior of the investigated Zr-based MG in a wide normal stress range. Moreover, the pressure and normal stress effects were separately considered and some other criteria were further discussed. It is found that under tensile loading, the pressure effect is weak while the normal stress effect is strong. Combined with previously reported results for a variety of MGs, the Ellipse criterion is found to have the capability to describe all the different contributions of the normal stress effect and thus may be suitable as a unified tensile fracture criterion for all MGs with different fracture behaviors. By combining the mode approximation technique with the upper and the lower bound theorems, we have derived a set of sequential inequalities on the final displacement of the structure. This can be applied to give a reasonable explanation for the criterion of choosing an optimal mode proposed by Symonds (1980). In addition, an approximate expression of the final displacement of the structure is suggested in cases where the \"mode approximation\" apparently works poorly. Together with a Cartesian coordinate velocity field different from Avitzur’s, the GM criterion is used to get a analytical solution for strip drawing .With working example of the strip drawing through wedge-shaped die, the calculated results of relative drawing stress by the GM criterion are compared with those by Mises criterion from Avitzur formula. On the one hand, a method of\npredicting a ductile fracture is proposed using a three-dimensional\nvoid model and the assumption of velocity discontinuity. The\nrelationship between the void volume fraction and the critical\nstrain to fracture, calculated with the help of the new model, shows\nthe same tendency as that obtained from the modified Thomason model.\nOn the other hand, the mechanical and metallographic analyses of the\nuniaxial tension experiment are performed using four kinds of carbon\nsteel.
