Dilatometric Sintering of Ti-2Al and Ti-5Al Elemental Powder

The effect of Al addition (2 and 5 at. pct) on sintering kinetics of Ti power was investigated. Al reduces the sintering rates, sinter density, increases activation energy of sintering and accelerates the grain growth. Sintering was controlled by mixed mode, i.e. transient liquid phase sintering, formation of intermetallics, and Ti grain boundary diffusion in TiAl2 and other intermetallics.

Effect of CuO Addition on the Sintering Behavior and Electrical Conductivity of 3Y-TZP

Yttria stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (3Y-TZP) doped with CuO was prepared, to get two compositions, 0.3 and 1 mole fraction CuO, respectively. The dilatometric study of the samples showed sintering to be improved for the samples doped with 0.3 mole fraction CuO, and to be deteriorated for the samples doped with 1 mole fraction CuO. The 1 mole fraction CuO doped 3Y-TZP showed higher tetragonal/monoclinic phase transformation which was accompanied by grain growth. The electrical conductivity decreased with the addition of CuO.

Finite-Element Simulation and Experimental Research of the Hot-Press Sintering of Nano-Sized Ceramic Powders

Numerical simulation of hot-press sintering of nano-sized ceramic powders was introduced by the commercial finite element code MSC.MARC. The powder plastic model and the thermo-mechanical coupled quadrilateral element were developed and adopted in the simulation. The mechanical and thermal properties of the nano-sized alumina based powders were determined. In addition, the experimental research and numerical simulation of the sintering process of different initial densities were carried out. The stress state in sintering of green compacts with different initial densities was analyzed by the densification theory. The reason for the density fluctuations of as-sintered ceramic bulks was found out.

Effect of Si3N4 Addition on the Mechanical Properties, Microstruc-tures, and Wear Resistance of Ti-6Al-4V Alloy

In order to improve the wear resistance of Ti-6Al-4V, different amounts of Si3N4 powder were added into the alloy powder and sintered at 1250℃. Porous titanium alloy with higher wear resistance was successfully fabricated. At sintering temperature, reaction took place and a new hard phase of Ti5Si3 formed. The mechanical properties of the fabricated alloys with different amounts of Si3N4 addition were investigated. The hardness of Ti-6Al-4V, which is the index of wear resistance, was increased by the addition of Si3N4. Amounts of Si3N4 addition have very significant influences on hardness and compressive strength. In present study, titanium alloy with 5 wt pct Si3N4 addition has 62% microhardness and 45% overall bulk hardness increase, respectively. In contrast, it has a 16.4% strength reduction. Wear resistance was evaluated by the weight loss during wear test. A new phase of Ti5Si3 was detected by electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) method. The original Si3N4 decomposed during sintering and transformed into titanium silicide. Porous structure was achieved due to the sintering reaction.

Microstructures and Dielectric Properties of Ba1-xSrxTiO3 Ceramics Doped with B2O3-Li2O Glasses for LTCC Technology Applications

Ba1-xSrxTiO3 ceramics, doped with B2O3-Li2O glasses have been fabricated via a traditional ceramic process at a low sintering temperature of 900 °C using liquid-phase sintering aids. The microstructures and dielectric properties of B2O3-Li2O glasses doped Ba1-xSrxTiO3 ceramics have been investigated systematically. The temperature dependence dielectric constant and loss reveals that B2O3-Li2O glasses doped Ba1-xSrxTiO3 ceramics have diffusion phase transformation characteristics. For 5 wt% B2O3-Li2O glasses doped Ba0:55Sr0:45TiO3 composites, the tunability is 15.4% under a dcpplied electric field of 30 kV/cm at 10 kHz; the dielectric loss can be controlled about 0.0025; and the Q value is 286. These composite ceramics sintered at low temperature with suitable dielectric constant, low dielectric loss, relatively high tunability and high Q value are promising candidates for multilayer low-temperature co-fired ceramics (LTCC) and potential microwave tunable devices applications.

用丝网印刷法制备Pt电极及其性能

采用单层和双层印刷法在氧化铝衬底上制备功能陶瓷厚膜用Pt电极, 研究了烧结温度、升温速率和电极厚度对Pt电极层的表面形貌、表面覆盖率和表面粗糙度的影响,以揭示晶粒长大、气孔生长及致密化机制. 结果表明, 在单层印刷Pt电极的烧结过程中,低温阶段残留的碳使不同温区Pt的主导扩散机制不同.双层印刷Pt电极中第一层在600℃下烧结后,印刷第二层再在1200℃下烧结具有最大表面覆盖率和最小平均粗糙度(其值约为0.82 um),同时具有最好的导电性能(方阻为0.044 Ω/□).

Kinetics Investigation of Sintering of Nanometer Size Metal Clusters:A Molecular Dynamics Study

The sintering process of nanometer size gold clusters is investigated by using molecular dynamics simulation in the frame of embedded atomistic method. Several molecular dynamics simulation techniques are used to observe and describe the evolution of the sintering process. The energy distribution for single cluster is examined and the snapshots of sintering process of two clusters are recorded. The evolution of sintering is also described by plotting the mass center changes with time for each cluster. The variations of kinetic and potential energy during the process of sintering are monitored and measured to analyze the dominant mechanisms of sintering from the energy point of view.

Effect of Y2O3 and Total Oxide Addition on Mechanical Properties of Pressureless Sintered β-SiC

The effect of Y2O3 and the total oxide volume fraction (Y2O3+Al2O3) on density and mechanical properties of low temperature (1770~1940℃) pressureless sintered β-SiC ceramics were presented. The optimum temperature for pressureless sintering of β-SiC was found to be 1850℃ and the optimum content of Y2O3 in the oxides was found to be between 40 and 57 wt pct. The highest sintered density was achieved by adding oxides at 14 vol. pct. Both of the highest strength and fracture toughness were achieved at 14 vol. pct oxide addition and yttria concentrations between 40 and 57 wt pct in the oxides. Hardness, on the other hand, was found to be the highest for samples with 14 vol. pct oxide addition and 64 wt pct Y2O3 in oxides.

Processing and Sintering of Agglomerate-free CaO-ZrO2 Powder

Coprecipitation supercritical fluid drying technology has been employed to synthesize calcia-stabilized zirconia ultrafine powder with low-cost inorganic salts as the starting materials. The sintering behaviors of these powders were also investigated. The results showed that supercritical fluid drying could effectively alleviate the hard agglomeration of grains during the gel drying process, and the morphology of the powder retained the network texture of the original gel. The resulting particles were characterized by small particle size (5~20 nm), better monodispersity and high surface area, which gave rise to high activity and sinterability. Consequently, these powders could readily be compacted into the desired shape and their densification could be carried out in shorter time and at lower temperatures. For instance, nanometer-sized powder calcined at 600ºC for 2 h could be cold-pressed into a green body and sintered at 1100º for 0.5 h to attain a dense body with bulk density of 5.9718 g/cm3 and specific pore volume of 0.0008 cm3/g.

Effect of Different Amounts of Graphite on the Sintering and Transverse Rupture Properties of Powder Metal Parts

Iron powders were mixed with graphite powders by 1~15 wt pct to produce block samples using powder metallurgy technique. The powders were blended in a three dimensional blender for 20 min and compacted in a die under 500 MPa by using a one directional press. Sinterability and mechanical properties of the samples with different carbon content were investigated. Sintering process was carried out on a belt furnace with flame curtain in dissociated ammonia atmosphere. Block samples produced were suitable for ASTM B-312 transverse rupture strength test apparatus and were tested with 0.050 kN/s velocity in a press under 100 g load. It was found that graphite amount up to 2 wt pct increased the contact area of particles and acted as a lubricant to affect the sintering behaviour positively. The results indicated that the samples containing up to 5 wt pct showed good sintering behaviour and also good hardness due to an increase in pearlite amount. However, the samples containing higher amount of graphite (more than 5 wt pct) affected the sintering behaviour negatively due to the settlement of free graphite around the Fe powders, which resulted in a decrease in the hardness and transverse rupture strength.
